Goal-Based Investing for Homemakers: A Plan of Your Own

By Mrs. Manalee Verneker

Homemakers often make many of a household's everyday money decisions: budgets, spending, saving for the children. Yet the family's savings and investments frequently sit entirely in someone else's name.

That can leave a gap. If circumstances change: through illness, separation or loss: a homemaker without savings, cover or a clear view of the family's finances can find herself on uncertain ground.

Three steps make a real difference. First, understand the full household picture: what is owned, owed and invested, and where. Second, build savings and investments in your own name, even if the amounts start small. Third, make sure you are protected, with health cover and nominations that reflect your wishes.

A plan of your own isn't about mistrust. It's about security and confidence, knowing that your future is provided for, whatever happens.
