Term Insurance for NRIs: Indian Cover While You Live Abroad

Many Indians abroad are covered only through their employer. That cover usually ends with the job, and it is often sized for the country you work in, not for a family and loans in India. A term plan from an Indian insurer is one way to close that gap.
This guide covers who can buy, how it works from abroad, and what changes when you come home. It names no insurer and recommends no policy; what is on offer depends on your country and profile.
Can NRIs buy term insurance in India?
Yes. Indian insurers offer term cover to NRIs living in many countries. Each insurer sets which countries, occupations and income levels it accepts. Seafarers, merchant navy officers and people in some regions may face conditions or extra questions.
Why NRIs choose Indian cover
- It stays with you. Change jobs, move country or come home, and the policy continues.
- It fits a family in India. The sum assured is in rupees and the claim is paid in rupees to your nominee.
- It matches Indian liabilities, such as a home loan in Goa or parents who depend on you.
- Premiums are fixed for the term in plain term plans, so cover bought young stays affordable.
How it works from abroad
- Application: online or through us, with passport, visa or residence proof, and income proof.
- Medical tests: depending on the insurer, done during a visit to India, at an approved centre abroad, or by video for some profiles.
- Premiums: paid from your NRE or NRO account, or from abroad as the insurer allows.
- Documents: kept in India with your family, who should know the policy exists and how to claim.
Disclose everything
Your country of residence, how often you travel, your occupation, and your health and habits all go on the proposal. Leaving something out can put the claim at risk years later, when your family can no longer explain it. Full disclosure may cost more or add conditions, but it gives you cover that holds.
How much cover
The method is the same as for anyone in India: loans, plus the goals your income was meant to fund, plus years of household expenses, minus what you already have. Leave employer cover abroad out of the count; it usually ends with the job. Our guide How much term insurance do I need? works through examples.
Worked example
A Dubai engineer with a Goa home loan
Rahul, 35, works in Dubai. His wife and two-year-old son live with his parents in Margao, where he is repaying a ₹40 lakh home loan. His only life cover comes with his job.
Using the needs method, his family would need about ₹1.5 crore: the loan, his son's education and fifteen years of household costs, less savings. He applies for a term plan to age 60, discloses his country, his travel and a past knee surgery, and completes the medical tests during his December visit home. The premium is paid yearly from his NRE account.
When he moves back to Goa four years later, he tells the insurer his new address and residence. The cover continues unchanged.
Amounts are illustrations; premiums and terms depend on the insurer and your profile.
When you move back
Tell the insurer about your new address and residence, and keep paying premiums from your resident account once your NRI accounts are changed. A plain term plan does not end because you return. It is also a good time to check the cover still matches your loans and family, and to update your nominee.
