Returning to India: your money checklist

Moving back from the Gulf, the UK, the US or a life at sea? Here is what to sort out before you leave, when you land and in your first year home, in the order it matters.

Are you NR, RNOR or resident this year?

Your tax status decides which of your income India taxes, and for how long income abroad stays outside it. It takes a minute to estimate.

Check my RNOR status

01 · 3 to 6 months before you move

Plan the move on paper first

  1. Work out your tax status, year by year

Your status for Indian tax depends on the days you spend in India each April-to-March year. Many people who return after years abroad are RNOR for two or three years, when income earned abroad is generally not taxed in India. Check yours with our RNOR calculator.

  2. List everything you hold abroad

Bank deposits, retirement savings such as a 401(k), a UK pension or end-of-service gratuity, foreign shares and RSUs, insurance policies. For each one, note whether it can stay where it is, and what it would cost to move or close. See your 401(k), UK pension or Gulf gratuity after moving back, and estimate UAE gratuity with our gratuity calculator.

  3. Do not close things in a hurry

Closing a retirement account or selling shares in the wrong year can cost tax in two countries. Some decisions are better made while you are RNOR; some need a tax specialist in the country you are leaving.

  4. Arrange health cover in India early

Overseas health cover usually ends when you leave. A new Indian policy starts its waiting periods only from its start date, so buying before you need it matters. See how we approach insurance.

  5. Check your life cover

Life cover tied to an overseas job usually ends with it. Make sure your family stays covered from the day you land; see term insurance for NRIs.

02 · When you land

Change your accounts from NRI to resident

  1. Tell your bank you are now resident

Once you return to live in India, your NRE and NRO accounts cannot stay as they are. They are changed to resident accounts, or the money can be moved to a Resident Foreign Currency (RFC) account if you want to keep it in foreign currency. Ask your bank how each existing deposit, including FCNR deposits, will be handled until it matures. What happens to each account.

  2. Update your mutual fund KYC

Every fund house you invest with needs your status changed from NRI to resident, your Indian address and a resident bank account for payments. Until this is done, redemptions are still treated as an NRI’s. The steps, in order.

  3. Convert your demat account

An NRI demat account, and any PIS account used for shares, is closed and the holdings move to a resident demat account.

  4. Bring your records together

PAN, Aadhaar, address proof and the new bank details, in one place. Every later step goes faster.

03 · The first year back

Put the savings you bring home to work

  1. Start with an emergency fund

Six months of household costs kept somewhere easy to reach, before any long-term investing. Our emergency fund calculator gives you the number.

  2. Give every lump sum a goal

Gratuity, a pension transfer or years of savings: decide what each part is for, such as children's education, a home in Goa or retirement income, and when you will need it. The goal decides the investment, not the other way round.

  3. Plan retirement income if you have stopped working

A systematic withdrawal plan from mutual funds can pay a monthly income from a corpus. Try the SWP calculator to see how long a sum could last. Figures are illustrations, not promises.

  4. Invest in stages, not all at once

Moving a large sum into markets in one go ties the result to a single day. Many returning families spread it over months, through a systematic transfer plan.

04 · Every year after

Keep the plan in step with your status

  1. Re-check your tax status each year

When RNOR ends you become an ordinary resident, and income and assets abroad must be reported in your Indian return. Your chartered accountant files the return; we keep the investment side ready for it. See DTAA, Form 67 and Schedule FA.

  2. Review nominees and records

Bank accounts, mutual funds and insurance should all name the right people. See nominations and succession.

Questions from returning NRIs

Once you return to live in India, an NRE account cannot continue as an NRI account. It is changed to a resident account, or the money can move to a Resident Foreign Currency (RFC) account. Ask your bank how any NRE or FCNR deposits will be handled until they mature.

A Resident Foreign Currency account lets a returning NRI keep foreign currency brought back from abroad in India, without converting it to rupees. Banks set the currencies, terms and interest.

Often two to three tax years, depending on how long you lived abroad and how often you visited. Our RNOR calculator estimates it from your days in India.

Yes. Each fund house needs your status changed from NRI to resident, with your Indian address and a resident bank account. We do this with you for the funds you hold through us.

There is no single answer. It depends on your goals, the tax rules in both countries and the costs of moving each holding. Decisions made in your RNOR years can be easier than later. We look at the investment side with you, and your tax specialist confirms the tax side.

Yes. Most of the planning can be done on WhatsApp or video while you are still abroad, and we meet in Margao once you are back.
